Lava flows define the soils. Altitude shapes acidity and structure. The direction a slope faces determines how a grape ripens — and ultimately, what ends up in your glass.
Standing at 3000 metres before visiting a winery is not a thrill. It is context — at the highest possible scale.
We reach the high altitudes of Etna on board dedicated 4x4 buses, climbing tracks of black ash impossible to access by car. The destination is 3000 metres — the highest point you can comfortably reach on the volcano.
From there, accompanied by a volcanological guide, we walk among the active side craters: smoking fissures, lunar landscapes, sweeping panoramas over Sicily, the Ionian coast and — on clear days — the Aeolian Islands on the horizon.
Then we descend, slowly, toward the vineyards. Standing at 3000 metres changes the way you read those vines. The same volcano you walked on a few hours earlier is now in your glass.
This is not adrenaline followed by tasting. It is one continuous experience, read through two altitudes.
